Nana's kolaches

The story behind this recipe is kind of a funny one. I'm not a fan of kolaches myself but Tyler grew up loving Mammaw's (sp?) kolaches. He said they were the most fluffy, wonderful things in the world and begged me to track down the recipe. I called a few family members and everyone deferred me to Nana. When I called Nana, I thought we had some kind of misunderstanding because we ended up with a date to make her kolaches together. She sent me the recipe and I got everything I needed and Nana came over a few days later. We got started and I told Nana how excited Tyler was for these kolaches, that he just loved Mammaw's kolaches growing up and he couldn't wait to have them again. Nana then told me that Mammaw never made a kolache in her life! She bought them from a neighbor whenever family came to visit!! I was dying laughing. We couldn't believe one of Tyler's most delicious childhood memories was actually not what he thought. So funny.

So Nana taught me how to make her kolaches in the end. She uses the dough from a friend's cinnamon roll recipe. Apparently it's delicious, but again, I don't like them and have therefore never tried these.

The typed recipe is the original, I always halve it because it still makes a crazy amount of dough, so I wrote that below the original.

Like the original recipe says, combine all ingredients to make a soft dough (sticks to your finger a bit) and let rise until almost double in size.

This is my setup when I'm forming the kolaches. Your hands get messy so I get everything ready and near me beforehand so I don't have to wash my hands a thousand extra times. I just buy a package of little sausages from Sam's to fill them. You'll also need some vegetable oil.

Like I said, the dough is sticky. But you want it sticky so that it's super soft! Roll it in a little flour, but only a little.

Dip your fingers in oil and rub on your opposite palm so the dough doesn't stick to you and you can mold it. Take a 1/2-1" size ball of dough and press it flat in your hand.

Put a little sausage in the middle and cover completely with dough. Notice there's not a whole lot of excess - you want the breading to be pretty thin around the kolache. At least, I'm told that's the best way.

I usually put parchment paper on the pans first but I was out this time around. Spraying the pans worked just fine. Let them rise if you can, but to be honest I usually don't see much of a difference in them when I let them sit. By the time I get the last pan rolled out I pop the first one in the oven. They rise in the oven just fine - I think the cold sausage stops it from rising too much.

Bake for about 15 minutes at 350, 'til they're goldish brown and smelling yummy! We freeze them in little bags - typically 5 to a bag. They'll freeze for up to 2 months, but they've never lasted that long around here. Tyler takes them out of the freezer and microwaves them for about 40 seconds and they're good to go!

*Note: I have done a little experimenting with other stuff in the kolaches. I have put little slices of cheese in with the sausages, and I have also tried a little piece of deli turkey with some cheese. Tyler liked them all. I usually just stick with sausage because it's already a very time-consuming process. Nana says she loves fruit kolaches, but I have no clue about those.

So there it is, finally. Sorry to Laura and whoever else asked for the recipe a really long time ago!

Little things

I picked March to be the one I would go without treats. March 2nd, these arrived. It's going to be a long month.

Whatever the other is doing always looks like more fun. Also, that is a gnarly weed in the background. Our poor yard is so neglected.

She is getting quite tricky! And I love the faces she makes.

We had a nice taste of true Houston spring with a 80+ degree day. The kids were sweaty outside!

When we came inside I turned on the ceiling fan and watching Max experience that was hilarious. He just looked at it and waved at it and loved feeling the breeze. It was so cute!

We love finding books with her name in them! This one was a really cute book too.

Tyler surprised us and came home early on a Wednesday night. We let the kids stay up late to play with him and it was so fun. Can't wait for more time together.

Max's first steps

There's something magical about Gigi and Poppy's living room... both of our kids have taken their first real steps there! We were there for dinner on Saturday night (Feb. 28th) and Max decided it was time. Thank goodness - Tyler was there and I was so hoping he would see the magic happen!

He won't really walk to anyone. He does it on his own terms. :) He starts out with his back to the couch/ottoman and then walks to the other once he's steady. I love watching him learn - he gets the cutest face, so proud of himself!

These pics were taken the next day. Love the progression.

Every day he gets exponentially better! This is such a fun stage.

Operation: Finish Projects

The irony about the title of this post is that it has been sitting in my drafts since October! Love it.

I have a way of getting super-excited about stuff. I love the beginning of things. I set lots of goals and start many projects, but my problem is follow-through! Time to sell/donate what I don't use or need, finish things I've started, and organize the rest.

First up was this wreath. I saw one like it at Target (this was a year ago) and decided instead of paying $20 for it I'd make one! Finally, 7 months later, I finished it. Just in time to... store it for next year.

Mom helped me finish this skirt I started in July. It's so cute and has an exposed zipper in the back that I really like.

I saw this garland on Pinterest and had all the paper set aside to do it while with my family in Lufkin for Thanksgiving last year! It was finally up at Christmas this year.

I've wanted to make curtains for the family room and turn the coffee table to an ottoman for a long time, and I finally did it! But definitely not by myself. Enter my expert-at-everything mother!

And my daughter who wanted to help. She even marked on the curtains for me! So helpful! Sense my sarcasm?? Luckily it was pencil and it erased pretty easily. I learned my lesson and gave her a piece of scrap fabric to do whatever she wanted to do.

Doing the grommets was my favorite part. Really easy with a nice result!

I'm considering adding two more panels, but we'll see how this is for a little while.

Turning this coffee table into an ottoman will get its own post, because I took a lot of pictures of the process!

It feels good to get some things actually finished!

Stake conference & big changes

We had a special Stake conference a few weeks ago, with another stake. They took ours and theirs and split them to create a new stake! We're excited to be a part of the new stake, and to be in the same stake as Gigi and Poppy. This has created a ripple effect and both of our callings have changed - Tyler gets to be in nursery with Millie and I'm still in YW. I'm sure there are lots of changes still to come. It's amazing to watch the Church grow and to be part of it all.

Since the adult session of Stake conference now includes youth 12-up, we just took the kids with us. Luckily we weren't the only ones. We went in one of the classrooms where they were broadcasting it and set up camp in the corner. Millie certainly made herself at home!

It cracked us up when Millie asked to hold Max and he looked almost her size. Never a dull moment with these two!

All things Millie

Millie is at such a fun age! Her latest catch phrase is "Don't worry about it." "I just put in a movie, don't worry about it, Mom." I came in the playroom to find a hat she had unraveled and she said, "It was just getting too long, so I fixed it. Don't worry about it."

Sharing and playing nicely is a constant battle, especially when having to share her own stuff. Her little playgroup was at our house on Friday and the only accurate comparison that comes to mind is The Hunger Games. It was so funny in some ways but so troubling in others! It feels like we're having to work on it and talk about it pretty constantly.

Millie is so self-entertaining, which I love about her. I was in church with the kids myself on Sunday and she just sat there and colored for almost the whole first hour!

I put Millie's hair into a bun (or a ball, as Millie calls it) and this is how it looked when it came out. So cute!

She has been asking to snuggle more lately, which I don't mind at all. It usually just means she's tired and wants to sleep!

Lookin' out the window, wishing we had popcorn popping on our tree.

Which of course turned into a wrestling match. Actually, I grabbed my phone to capture a sweet hug, but by the time I caught a picture it was this. Just goes to show you've got to be on your toes around here.

This was before our FHE temple excursion - Millie asked if we were going to the temple where Tyler and I got married, so I pulled out the temple book and all the other temple paraphernalia we had lying around to show her. Not sure how we ended up being on the kitchen floor, but oh well. She loved looking through it all and couldn't believe how many there are. She was especially interested in the temples where people she knew had been married, so we went through all of those. I love those moments when she's so eager and excited to learn!

Millie is such a fun big sister and leader. She totally reminds me of my sister Steph in a lot of ways, always being the ringleader of the fun. Max is most excited to see her when he wakes up and he'll follow her all around the house.

We sure love this Millie girl.

Stuff from Tyler's phone

Max loves it when I bite the handle on his pacifier and pull it out of his mouth! Gotta love baby humor.

Tinkerbell/Mary the mother of Jesus.

We're a clothing optional house from dinner time to bath time, especially for messy Max.

Millie loves the pipe cleaner crown I made for her. Tyler is so excited to see the kids on Friday nights. He usually doesn't see them from Sunday night til Friday night so it's really fun to watch them be so excited to play together.

FHE fun lately

We're trying to do better at FHE lately, so I thought I'd record some of what we're doing.

A couple weeks ago we set up our tent in the living room and talked about Mosiah 2-4, King Benjamin's speech. Millie loved it. At one point we talked about serving others and how it's important and can help us return to live with Heavenly Father after this life. Tyler asked, "Millie, where do you want to go after this life?" to which Millie replied, "Oh, I don't know, maybe to go get ice cream?" It was pretty hilarious. I hope she's understanding a little deeper than that. After Max went to bed, Millie and Daddy got to watch Brave from the tent.

We realized as we got close to the end of February that we wouldn't be able to go to the temple, so we decided to combine it with FHE and at least be outside the temple together. Max fell asleep on the way there but Millie loved having FHE in the car. When we got there and were walking around the grounds, Millie was whining and crying about not being able to go inside (and it was freezing), so we quickly took a picture and left. We stopped at the mall on our way home to browse the Apple store and get a treat from Cinnabon. Fun times!

Funny kiddos

Max was hitting the cup with the marker over and over and kind of dancing. For some reason all I could think of was the Will Ferrell Cowbell skit on SNL. Cracked me up.

OCD much? Not sure where she learned to do this.

We have since made a rule against being under the trampoline when someone's on it, but these two were giggling so much the other day looking at each other!

This is Max's latest goofy smile. Oh I love this boy.

Max has this funny way of playing with his food. If it's not a squishy food, he will press down on it with his finger until it pops out one way or another and flies in the air.

One of her best outfit creations, in my opinion!
